Science

During Science lessons with Miss Hore the children have been busy investigating Earthworms.  They have had the opportunity to touch and feel them and write about them.  This led us to look at the difference between fiction and non fiction texts.  The structural features of a non fiction text that we have identified are - title, contents page, glossary, and labelled diagrams.  The class are confident with      identifying facts and opinions on a range of topics.

Week 4

Thanks to the parents who have made the time to come and discuss their child's progress with me in an interview this week and last week.  It has been wonderful to have this opportunity to let you know how they are going.

This Friday is the Cross Country Event.  Please make sure your child has suncream already applied before school, a water bottle and hat in addition to lunch that we will eat at school.  They are allowed to wear a coloured shirt to match their house colour and their school shorts.  If you wish to take your child home after the event or keep them with you and supervise them while they watch a sibling run then please come to see me on Friday.  I will need to cross them off my attendance list.  All children in my care are to stay under the house colour tents, not sit with you on the grass area.

This term we have Yoga lessons on Thursdays.  At the end of the lesson the instructor, Beth, gives the child an affirmation card and a note to take home explaining what they did in the lesson.  The lessons are fantastic and teach the children the skills they need to calm down and regulate their own behaviours.

For the next four week we have a Student Teacher, Miss Hore, with us helping and teaching in our class.  She has been last term for individual days observation.  We wish her well on her Practicum and hope she enjoys teaching and learning in 1B. I welcome her help and enthusiasm and extra pair of hands.

Term 2 Week 1

Welcome back to Term 2.  The children had some great adventures on their holidays and wrote about them this morning. Swimming has finished until Term 4.  Dancing replaces swimming and we had our first lesson today.  The children learnt a dance and some photos follow.  For the children who attend private Speech and Drama on Tuesday afternoons their lesson will be changed to another day to avoid the clash in future.  The children really enjoyed the lesson.  The instructor is named Sammy and she is from Footsteps Dance.  You may have witnessed the fun at the school disco in the past.

Week 8

In Art lessons today Ms Brustolin taught the class how to create all types of small lines, swirls and circles to create an abstact artwork to celebrate St Patrick's Day.  She called it a Scene of Green.

In Maths we have been revising reading and ordering number words to ten.

We use number ladders to order numbers.  The class are getting much better at forming the numbers correctly although some are still facing the wrong way.

Week 6 and 7

For the past two weeks in Maths we have been using counters and apps on the IPads to learn about the teen numbers.  The children are able to count a collection of objects, show a visual representation of a teen number, write the numbers in numerals and words, reorder the numbers, put in missing numbers, find the numbers on a number line and show the number on a tens frame.  Below are some photos of the tens frames.  This important to understand that a given teen number e.g. 14 is made up of one ten and four ones. Tomorrow we will be working on a number ladder for the first time.  Check back for the photos of what we do with a number ladder.

The class are becoming very independent during Literacy Groups.  Today two groups practised their sight words using magnets on white boards and play doh.  The play doh activity helps their fine motor skills as well - rolling the sausages to form the letters.  Using a multi-sensory approach is a lot more fun than just trying to read them off the keyring.  Another group used the Literacy apps on the IPads to consolidate initial sounds, learn sight words and do rhyming activities.  Some of the Apps we use are
Squiggles, Art Maker, Bugs and Bubbles, Bugs and Buttons, Phonics Awareness, Eggy Words and Sentence Maker. The final group worked with the teacher on handwriting and phonics activities.
